Problems stamped concrete takes care of

At Rock Springs Concrete we hear about these around Rock Springs and Green River, and they're worth fixing early, since cracks and low spots let water in and grow.

  • A patio that looks plain

If the concrete out back is just gray and flat, stamping gives new concrete the look of stone, brick, wood or tile without laying a single piece.

  • A slab that's sunk or cracked

Old slabs usually sink because the base was raked flat instead of dug out and packed. We break it out and pour the new one on packed ground.

  • Water pooling by the house

A slab that tips toward your house sends rain and melting snow to the foundation. We check where the water runs and form the new slab to slope away.

  • Pavers that rock and shift

Loose pavers rock underfoot and sprout weeds in the gaps. A stamped slab gives you the paver look in one poured piece, with no stones to work loose.

Fix the old slab or pour a new one?

If your old slab is level and solid, a smaller fix usually does it, but if it's sunk, tipped or breaking up, I'd tear it out and pour new on a packed base.

  • A repair is enough when:

    • The slab sits level and solid
    • Cracks are thin and not growing
    • The color is dull, not damaged
    • Water drains away from the house
    • The damage is in one small spot
  • A new stamped slab makes sense when:

    • The slab has sunk or tipped
    • Cracks are wide or keep spreading
    • Water pools against the house
    • The top is flaking or popping out
    • You want a new pattern or color

  4. Pour and stamp day

Stamping gives us one window before the top stiffens, so the mats and color are laid out before the truck shows up, the way a cook preps a station.

  5. Curing, sealing and clean-up

From there the concrete sets the schedule, not us, so we keep it protected while it cures and gains strength, then wash off the powder, seal it and clean up.

What our stamped concrete work includes

  1. A dug-out, packed base

We dig out and pack the subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, so it's firm before any color goes on.

  2. Thickness and steel for the use

The slab's thickness and its rebar, the steel inside it, are set by what it'll carry, a patio table or a truck.

  3. Your color method

We help you pick integral color, mixed all the way through, or a color hardener that gives the top a tougher skin.

  4. Pattern and accent color

We press the pattern with rubber mats, and a colored release powder settles in the grout lines for a two-tone look.

  5. Joints that hide in the pattern

We plan control joints, cuts that give the slab a place to crack, along the pattern's grout lines so they disappear.

  6. Two thin coats of sealer

We seal in two thin, even coats, because one heavy coat can bubble, turn cloudy white and get slick when wet.

What sets the price of a stamped slab?

Size is where it starts, but the ground often matters more. If the old slab has to come out, or the dirt needs digging down and packing, that's work before any color goes on. A driveway that carries cars needs more thickness and steel than a patio. Your color method, the pattern and how many accent colors you want all add time on pour day, and so do curves, steps and tight corners.

The schedule turns on weather, and I'd rather move a pour date than rush one into it, because a slab stamped late loses its detail and grinding it off is the only fix. If the budget's tight, I'll steer you to a simpler pattern before I'll thin out the base, since the base is hidden on day one and decides whether the slab stays flat. Your figure comes in the written estimate.

Why Rock Springs homeowners call us for stamped concrete

We've been in business since 2017, and I'm on every job, from the first walk-through to pour day with our crew. I started on a restaurant line, and the kitchen taught me prep and staying calm when things move fast, which is most of what stamping asks. I'll tell you why we do each step, and I'll be straight with you when something isn't the right fit.

Stamping is flatwork, the slabs like patios, driveways and walks we're best known for, so it gets the same dig-out and packing as a concrete sidewalk or a garage floor. We're licensed and fully insured. When you're ready, call (307) 209-5832 or send the form.

Stamped concrete questions we hear

How much does stamped concrete cost in Rock Springs, WY?

There isn't one set price, because every stamped job is priced off its own size, base work, color and pattern. I walk it with you and put your number in a written estimate, and what moves it most is laid out in the price section above.

What is the best color method for a stamped concrete driveway?

Color hardener is the common choice for a driveway, because it gives the slab a harder top skin that stands up to traffic. Its color lives only in that top layer, so a deep gouge shows gray, and it has to go on evenly or the color turns blotchy. Integral color runs all the way through and is more forgiving, but it won't reach the deepest or brightest tones.

What causes stamped concrete to flake or crack in winter?

Freezing does, when water soaks into the concrete and turns to ice. Where concrete freezes, the damage shows up as the top scaling or flaking off, small popouts and cracks that can get worse with each freeze and thaw, and even a color-hardened, sealed slab can be hurt if it's saturated when it freezes. One concrete guide calls air entrainment, tiny air bubbles mixed in to give that ice room, a must for outdoor concrete where frost damage can happen, especially driveways that see cars and deicing salt.

How do I keep stamped concrete looking good?

Keep it sealed. One installation guide advises resealing stamped concrete every 2 to 3 years, so the finish needs care for as long as you own it, not just the first coat. I'd rather tell you that now than have it surprise you later.

When can you wash the release powder off stamped concrete?

Once the powder maker's cure time has passed, which is usually a day or more and longer in cold weather. Wash it too soon and you can pull the color or scar the soft surface, so we wait it out before we wash and seal.

Will a new stamped concrete patio crack like my old one?

It can still crack, since all concrete does, but a packed base and planned control joints keep cracks where they do the least harm. Old slabs usually crack where nobody chose because the base was raked level instead of packed, or the joints were cut late or skipped. We pack the base and plan the joints into the pattern before stamping, which is the best answer I know.
