What decorative concrete fixes at your house

Most decorative calls we get in Rock Springs start with concrete that looks tired, and a new finish works best while the slab underneath is still solid.

  • Plain gray concrete

Your patio or walk works fine but looks like a parking spot. Color, stain or texture can make it look like slate, brick or natural stone.

  • A worn, tired surface

Concrete that's sound but shabby doesn't have to come out. An overlay is a thin layer of cement-based material laid over the old slab, and it gives the slab a new face.

  • Color gone patchy

Old color that has faded unevenly can usually be cleaned, recolored and sealed so the whole surface reads as one finish again.

  • A new slab that looks bare

If you're pouring a new patio or walk anyway, the color and texture go in with the pour, so the slab looks planned from the first day.

Refinish the concrete you have, or pour new?

If the slab underneath is level, solid and draining the right way, a new finish usually makes sense. If it's moving or breaking up, a new look won't save it.

  • A new finish is enough when:

    • The slab is level and solid
    • Cracks are few and fine
    • Water runs away from the house
    • You mainly want a new look
    • The size and shape already work
  • A new pour is better when:

    • The slab is sinking or heaving
    • Cracks are wide or still growing
    • Water pools or runs toward the house
    • The surface is breaking up badly
    • You want a new size or shape

How a decorative job goes

  1. You call or send the form

Tell us what surface you have, roughly how big it is and the look you're after. We set a time for me to come out and see it.

    A visit booked

  2. I walk the job with you

I come out myself and look at the concrete or the ground. The first question is whether you want new concrete or a new look on what you have.

    A plan for your surface

  3. You get it in writing

You get a written estimate for the method, the look and the prep. If the job needs a permit, we take care of it before we start.

  4. Setup, then the work

Everything is set up and checked before the concrete or the overlay arrives, so nobody is scrambling once the material is down and the clock is running.

  5. Cure, seal and clean up

After that the concrete sets the schedule, not us, because it has to cure, which is the wait while it hardens enough to use. If we stain, we plan around the days it has to stay clear until it's sealed.

What our decorative concrete work includes

  1. Color in the mix or on top

Color can be mixed through the concrete or worked into the fresh surface, depending on the look and where the slab sits.

  2. Stains and dyes

A chemical stain reacts with the concrete to color it, while a dye soaks in as a liquid and colors it without that reaction.

  3. Texture and pattern

We texture or press a pattern into the surface so it reads like slate, brick or stone, or we expose the stone in the mix.

  4. Overlays on existing slabs

An overlay goes over sound concrete, so you get a new surface and keep the slab you already have.

  5. Base and surface prep

New pours start with a dug-out, packed subgrade, the ground the slab sits on, and old surfaces get cleaned so they take color.

  6. Sealing

A sealer goes on last to protect the color and make the surface easier to keep clean.

What decides the cost of decorative concrete?

The first choice matters most. A stain or an overlay on sound concrete skips the tear-out and the new base, while a new decorative pour starts from the ground up. After that it's size and detail. One color with a light texture costs less than layered color, a stone pattern or a lot of work around steps and tight corners.

Condition counts too, because old concrete that needs heavy cleaning or sanding before it'll take color adds time. On new work, the base is the first thing people want to cut, since nobody sees it on day one. I won't trim it, because that's the part that keeps your finish from settling and cracking with the dirt. Weather and curing move the schedule more than anything we do, and I put your number in writing after I walk the job.

Why Rock Springs homeowners call us for decorative work

I came to concrete from restaurant kitchens, and the lesson carried over. The cook who's ready before service has a calm night. We've been pouring since 2017, and every decorative job starts with one question, new concrete or a new look on what you have, because that answer shapes everything after it.

I come out to look at every job, and I'm on site while our crew does the work. If a pour date lands on bad weather, I'd rather move it than rush it, and I'll tell you straight when a new finish won't fix what's wrong with a slab. Call (307) 209-5832 to set up a visit.

Questions about decorative concrete

Can I decorate my existing concrete instead of replacing it in Rock Springs?

Yes, if the slab is sound, an overlay or a stain can give it a new surface without tearing it out. If it's sinking, heaving or badly cracked, a new finish won't fix that, and I'll tell you so when I see it.

How long does stained concrete need before you can walk on it?

One trade group's guide specification keeps stained concrete closed to traffic for at least 3 days and protected from spills until it's sealed. A spill before sealing can leave a stain of its own, so we plan the work around those days and let you know when you'll get the surface back.

Will decorative concrete hold up to freezing and de-icing salt?

It can, but research on cold regions finds that freeze-thaw cycles combined with de-icing salt can considerably shorten concrete's life, so the mix and the care both matter. Entrained air is a network of tiny, evenly spread bubbles in the mix that gives concrete room to relieve pressure as it freezes, so ask about it on any new pour. Federal pavement guidance says heavier deicer use may call for more air, though that's written for roads, not patios.

What looks can decorative concrete create?

Decorative concrete can be colored and textured to look like slate, brick or natural stone. That comes from color, stains, dyes, texturing, exposed stone, pressed patterns, polishing and sealers, alone or together. Polished and stained finishes suit indoor slabs too, which we cover under concrete floor installation, and concrete retaining walls can be planned to suit the patio beside them.

How much does decorative concrete cost in Rock Springs?

Your price comes down to whether we're refinishing what you have or pouring new, how big the area is and how detailed the look is. Refinishing sound concrete usually costs less because it skips the tear-out and the base work. I put your number in writing after I walk the job.

How do I keep a new decorative slab from cracking like the old one?

Nobody can promise concrete won't crack, but it's far less likely when the base is dug out and packed, water drains away from the house and control joints go in on time. Control joints are cuts in the slab that give it a planned place to crack, so the cracks don't show up in spots nobody chose. Those are the steps we don't rush.
